Manchester United’s Greatest Premier League Team

muWith Manchester United on course for their lowest Premier League finish in the first season since Alex Ferguson’s retirement Janes Jerseys takes a look back at what we consider to be Manchester United’s greatest team since the formation of the Premier League.

Peter Schmeichel (1991-1999)

Peter Schmeichel is arguably Manchester United’s greatest EVER goalkeeper and one of the best goalkeepers the world has ever seen.

Schmeichel joined from the club from Bronby for the bargain price of £505,000 in the summer of 1991 and made his Manchester United debut in a 2-0 victory over Notts County.

Schmeichel helped the club win their first league title for 26 years in the inaugural season of the Premier League keeping an impressive 22 clean sheets.

Schmeichel went on to five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and one League Cup.

He also famously captained the team to the Champions League trophy in his final appearance for the club.

During his eight years with Manchester United Schmeichel made 392 appearances keeping an incredible 178 clean sheets and famously scoring one goal against Rotor Volgograd.

He became the first goalkeeper to keep 100 clean sheets in the Premier League when he kept a clean sheet against Crystal Palace on.

Schmeichel won the UEFA goalkeeper of the year in 1992, 1993, 1997 and 1998.

Gary Neville (1992-2011)

Gary Neville was a graduate on the famous “Class of 92” which included Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Gary’s brother Phil.

Having captained the youth team to FA Youth Cup glory in the 1991-92 season Neville made his senior debut against Torpedo Moscow in the UEFA Cup in September 1992.

With Paul Parker out injured Gary Neville became the teams first choice right back, a position he retained until his retirement in 2011.

After Roy Keane’s departure in November 2005 Neville was appointed as club captain.

Neville went on to make 602 appearances for the club scoring 7 goals, winning 8 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and 2 European Champions League trophies.

Denis Irwin (1990-2002)

Denis Irwin was one of the most reliable and consistent performers of his generation although often underrated.

Irwin joined the side from Oldham in the summer of 1990 in a £625,000 move from Oldham Athletic, making his debut against Coventry City on the 25th August 1990.

In his first season with the club Irwin helped the club to win the European Cup Winners Cup, defeating Barcelona in the final.

Irwin was an ever present as Manchester United lifted their first league title for 26 years and was he also featured in every game in the double winning season of 1993-94.

During his time with the club Irwin won seven Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup, one European Champions League and one European Cup Winners Cup.

Denis Irwin made 529 appearances and scored 33 goals for Manchester United before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of the 2001-02 season.

Jaap Stam (1998-2001)

Jaap Stam only lasted with the side just over three seasons but proved to hugely popular with the Manchester United faithful.

Stam joined the club from Dutch side PSV for a then world record fee for a defender of £10.6m and made his debut in a 3-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Charity Shield.

In his first season with the club Stam helped Manchester United to the famous treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and European Champions League.

During his time with the club Manchester United became the first team to win three consecutive seasons.

Stam made 127 appearances for Manchester United scoring one goal against Leicester in a 6-2 victory.

Stam was voted UEFA Club Best Defender of the Year in 1998-99 and 1999-00.

Rio Ferdinand (2002-present)

Rio Ferdinand is one of the best football playing centre halves of a generation and arguably England’s most accomplished defender since the legendary Bobby Moore.

Ferdinand joined the club for a British record transfer fee of £30m and he is still the most expensive English footballer in history and the most expensive defender in world football.

Rio made his debut for the team on the 27th August 2002 in a Champions League qualifying game against Zalaagerszeg which Manchester United won 5-0.

Ferdinand helped Manchester United to win the Premier League in his first season at the club playing in 28 league games.

Ferdinand famously missed a drugs test in September 2003 which led to him receiving an eight month ban.

Ferdinand has made nearly 450 appearances for Manchester United scoring 8 goals and winning six Premier League titles, two League Cups and one Champions League trophy.

Rio captained Manchester United in the memorable penalty shoot-out victory in the Champions League final against Chelsea.

Ferdinand featured in the FIFA World XI for the 2007-08 season.

Ryan Giggs (1990-present)

Ryan Giggs is the eldest member of the “Class of 92” and the only one to still be playing at the grand old age of 40.

Giggs made his debut for the club on the 2nd March 1991 in a 2-0 defeat and scored his first goal for the club in a 1-0 victory over Manchester City.

Giggs is the only player to have appeared in every Premier League season since it was founded in 1992.

Up until the 2013-14 season he had also scored in every campaign.

Giggs is the most decorated player in the history of English football with an incredible 13 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cup Winners medals, 3 League Cup winners medals and 2 Champions League winners medals.

Giggs has made over 950 appearances for the club, a record for a Manchester United player, scoring 168 goals.

During a truly illustrious career Giggs has set numerous records including most Premier League appearances, most Champions League appearances, most goals by a British player in the Champions League and the oldest scorer in the Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo (2003-2009)

Cristiano Ronaldo was often referred to a as a show pony in his early years with his countless step-overs looking great but not being particularly productive.

During his time with the club, under the guidance of Ferguson, Ronaldo channelled his undoubted ability to become one of the best players in the world.

Ronaldo joined the team from Sporting Lisbon for £12.2m having impressed Alex Ferguson whilst playing in a friendly against Manchester United.

Ronaldo made his debut as a substitute on the 16/08/03 in a 4-0 victory over Bolton and scored his first goal in a 3-0 victory over Portsmouth.

In his first season Ronaldo helped Manchester United to win the FA Cup scoring the first goal in a 3-0 victory over Millwall.

Ronaldo made 292 appearances for Manchester United scoring an impressive 118 including 42 goals in 49 appearances as he helped Manchester United win the Premier League and Champions League, winning a host of personal awards in the process including UEFA Club Footballer of the Year.

Ronaldo won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups and one Champions League trophy with Manchester United before leaving to join Real Madrid for a world record transfer fee of £80m.

Roy Keane (1993-2005)

Roy Keane was a dominating, tough-tackling, highly competitive central midfielder that epitomised the spirit of Manchester United under the management of Alex Ferguson.

Keane joined the club in the summer of 1993 signing from Nottingham Forest for £3.75m and making his debut against Aston Villa on the 23rd August in a 2-1 victory Aston Villa.

During his first season with the club Keane helped the team win the Premier League and FA Cup to claim a famous double.

Keane was handed the Manchester United captaincy following the shock retirement of Eric Cantona at the beginning of the 1997-98 season, a position he kept until leaving in 2005.

Keane made 480 appearances during his 12 years at the club scoring 51 goals and winning seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and one Champions League trophy.

Keane left the club on the 15th December 2005 to sign for boyhood club Celtic.

Paul Scholes (1993-2011 & 2012-2013)

Paul Scholes is the last member of the “Class of 92” to feature in our greatest Manchester United Premier League team.

Scholes was arguably the greatest attacking midfielder of his generation, although he was occasionally let down by his ability to mistime a tackle which saw him collect over 120 yellow cards and 10 red cards and famously miss the 1999 Champions League final through suspension.

Scholes made his debut for the club on the 21st September 1994 scoring both goals in a 2-1 league cup victory over Port Vale.

During his first season as a first team player Scholes helped the side finish 2nd in the Premier League and reach the FA Cup final where they lost to Everton 1-0.

Scholes famously retired from professional football at the end of the 2010-11 season before Ferguson talked him into returning in January 2012.

During his two spells with Manchester United Scholes made 718 appearances and scored 155 goals winning eleven Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups and two Champions League trophies.

Eric Cantona (1992-1997)

Eric Cantona was nicknamed “King Eric” by Manchester United fans, regarded by many as Manchester United’s greatest ever player and his name still reverberates around Old Trafford today.

Cantona signed for the club in a £1.2m switch from rivals Leeds United on the 27th November 1992 making his debut as a substitute against Manchester City on the 6th December 1992.

In his first season Cantona helped the team to their first league title in 26 years as they won the Premier League finishing 10 points clear of Manchester United.

In January 1995 Cantona attracted headlines for the wrong reasons as he launched a Kung -Fu style kick at a Crystal Palace fan on his way back to the tunnel after he had been sent off. The incident saw Cantona banned from football for eight months and many argue cost Manchester United the league title.

Following Steve Bruce’s departure Cantona was handed the captains armband at the start of the 1996-97 campaign in which Manchester United won their fourth title in five years.

At the end of the 1996-97 season Cantona surprisingly announced he was retiring from professional football at the age of 30.

During his time at Manchester United Cantona made 185 appearances scoring 82 goals and winning four Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

Ruud van Nistelrooy (2001-2006)

The last position in the team is filled by Ruud van Nistelrooy who is arguably the most clinical finisher to play for the side in the Premier League.

Van Nistelrooy signed for the club in the summer of 2001 joining from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of £19m and made his debut in a 2-1 Charity Shield defeat against Liverpool.

In his first season with the club Van Nistelrooy scored 23 goals in the league (including scoring in 8 consecutuive mataches to set a record which he subsequently broke) and 36 goals in all competitions.

During his five years with the club Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals in 219 appearances and won one Premier League title, one FA Cup and one League Cup.

With rumours of a rift with Ferguson Van Nistelrooy left the club in the July 2006 to sign for Real Madrid for a fee of £11m.

Wenger: Walcott right about attitude

Arsene Wenger says he agrees with Theo Walcott’s assertion that his Arsenal players “don’t believe they are good enough”, and wonders whether all the negativity around the team is affecting the squad.

• Blog: Is it all in their heads?

Walcott questioned whether the side have a psychological issue after the latest first-half capitulation against a big team, this time in the 2-1 defeat away to Chelsea on Sunday. The Arsenal manager, however, could only concur.

“I agree with him,” Wenger said. “The players come out and think ‘we could have done better’. But when you look at the first half we lost goals we shouldn’t lose, 50/50s you cannot lose in big games. You can say what you want but you have to go with a mentality in big games based on belief and total commitment.

“You can always find explanations but at the end of the day you turn up and you play with full power. Is the repeated sceptical attitude of the people around us affecting the belief of the players? I don’t know. But we have to raise beyond that and take that as a challenge. (more…)

The History of Wembley Stadium

GBR: England V Ukraine 2010 World Cup Qualifying European Zone - Group SixThe history of Wembley stadium is one that will remain close to the heart of proud English men and women for thousands of years. Wembley has played host to hundreds of legendary sporting events over the years, and the new Wembley will do so for years to come. In this guide, we will explore just a small section of the history of one of the most historic monuments in the world.

As many of you will be aware, Wembley is the home of English football and all major domestic football and Rugby finals. Aside from football, Wembley plays host to other entertainment events on various days throughout the year, over the past couple of years some of the world’s finest bands and solo artists have played at Wembley Stadium. Currently there is a stadium tour in operation twice a day. This tour features all the new features of Wembley, and also details a lot of the history of the previous stadium.

History

The Wembley grounds are in Brent, London. Since 1880 there have been various sporting events held on the grounds, even though the first recognised stadium was not built until 1923. In 1880, Wembley had a mixture of both football and cricket pitches. In 1889 the chairman of the Metropolitan Railway decided to build a four legged tower at 350 metres high to generate revenue to the area. However, after a while, the project ran out of money, and at just 61 metres the building had to be deemed complete. This building was named the Watkins Folly (after the chairman of the metropolitan railway). This structure was destroyed in 1907, due to new plans to build a larger stadium.

After the end of the First World War, the government put a plan in place to build an exhibition that contained a sports centre as part of the area. At the time, the area was used as an 18 hole golf course.

The new stadium, (finished in 1923) was designed and completed for just £750,000, and was completed in a total of 300 days. Since 1923 until the stadium was pulled down in 2003, the stadium only went through minor developments, including instillation of floodlights in 1955, an electronic scoreboard and roof in 1963.

The old Wembley stadium was deemed too old fashioned by the FA after various meetings, and in the year 2000 the final decision was made to develop ‘new Wembley’.

The new Wembley was originally scheduled to be completed by 2003. However, due to delays; the stadium was not officially handed over until mid 2007. New Wembley boasts a large retractable roof, and the largest single arch in the world. Upon completion, the project cost just over £900 million, (double the original budget). The new stadium has areas dedicated to showing off the history of the Wembley site. The capacity of the new stadium is 90,000 (just 11,000 more than old Wembley), however, this does make it the second largest stadium in Europe.

The History of Soccer

Soccer, or football as it is known every country but the United States, has a long and rich history that began somewhere in England back in the 1900s. While the sport is popular all over the world, the sport traces its’ roots back to England, which is often called the “home of football” because the first soccer leagues were started there, as well as the first official governing organization.

Many experts believe that football was played in some form or other before the 19th century, but the fact remains that there were no official rules until then. In 1863 the Football Association was established in England and they proceeded to hold meetings to come up with what would become the official rules that still hold true today. Games soon commenced using the new guidelines in 1864.

Every sport eventually needs a tournament, and football was no different. Just seven years after games started under the rules established by the Football Association, they started the FA Cup. This was at first a tournament that only featured amateur teams, but within a couple years it was expanded as soccer became more and more popular.

While the football season and tournament was still fairly disorganized, this all changed in 1888 when a football league was finally established. The original Football League had 12 clubs that played one game against each team at home and one at the visitor’s home. Teams got 1 point for a tie and two for a win. This was the first official league in the world, and soon it expanded into more divisions and teams all over England. (more…)

First played in 1960 under the name of UEFA European Nations Cup, the idea of this popular European football league was first suggested by Henri Delaunay in 1927 who was a member of French Football Federation. Finally in 1960, his dream turned into reality and the tournament was held in France. In his honor, the tournament trophy was named as Henri Deluanay Trophy. 17 teams participated out of which three teams did not played- West Germany, England and Italy. Among the 14 remaining teams, USSR made its way into the final and won the first tournament trophy by outsmarting Yugoslavia by 2-1.

After that, the name of this tournament was changed to European Football Championship in 1968 and then since 1992, this tournament became popular as Euro. Held once in every four years; statistical reports show that this is the third most popular sports tournament in the world after Olympic Games and World Cup. Football Boots (Soccer Cleats) The History

Football Boots: Earliest Recorded – King Henry VIII in 1526

King Henry VIII’s football boots were listed within the Great Wardrobe of 1526, a shopping list of the day. They were made by his personal shoemaker Cornelius Johnson in 1525, at a cost of 4 shillings, the equivalent of £100 in today’s money. Little is known about them, as there is no surviving example, but the royal football boots are known to have been made of strong leather, ankle high and heavier than the normal shoe of the day.

Football Boots – The 1800’s

Moving forward 300 years saw football developing and gaining popularity throughout Britain, but still remaining as an unstructured and informal pastime, with teams representing local factories and villages in a burgeoning industrial nation. Players would wear their hard, leather work boots, which were long laced and steel toe-capped as the first football boots. These football boots would also have metal studs or tacks hammered into them to increase ground grip and stability.

As laws become integrated into the game in the late 1800’s, so saw the first shift in football boots to a slipper (or soccus) style shoe, with players of the same team starting to wear the same boots for the first time. Laws also allowed for studs, which had to be rounded. (more…)

Chelsea FC Consider Building A New Stadium

Chelsea Football Club are considering the possibility of building a new stadium after news this week that the club are set to make attempts to buy back the freehold on the stands and pitch of their current stadium, Stamford Bridge, which are owned by an organisation known as the Chelsea Pitch Owners.

The ownership of the pitch and stands was sold to the group in 1993 by former club chairman Ken Bates, ensuring the club could never be sold to developers or the stadium relocated without the consent of the supporters. Following an ambitious re-development of the ground in the 1970s when the proposal was to develop a 50,000 all seated stadium, although the plans were revolutionary they were also far too ambitious. Chelsea found themselves in severe financial difficulties by the mid 1970s which forced the club to sell many of its star players and ultimately a decision was made to sell the Stamford Bridge ground to property developers in order to generate income and pay off some of the debts as the club was nearly bankrupt.

The decision to sell the ground nearly saw the end of the football club as they faced financial ruin, a ten year legal battle ensued which finally saw the Blues win back their Stadium in 1992, when ironically the developers themselves went bankrupt, lifting the threat of eviction from their own ground and it being redeveloped as houses or shopping pre (more…)

Arsenal FC

ImageThe rich history of Arsenal football goes back to 1886 at a Arsenal munitions factory in Woolwich. With help from co-workers and local natives that contributed to the start of the football club, the team had no name despite playing it’s first game against Dial Square which they humbly lost 6-0. While sitting at the local pub called Royal Oak, the team name was invented combining the workplace and the pub, hence Royal Arsenal was born. The name only stuck for five years and the founders of the team eventually went with Woolwich Arsenal for the team name. What began as fun and exercise for these hardworking men, little did history know or the men themselves of what they unleashed. In that same year Woolwich Arsenal became a professional club.

In the early days of the league itself, the London FA tried to coax other London teams like Tottenham, Queen’s Park Rangers and Millwall to form a southern league but the proposal was rejected. Woolwich Arsenal applied to the league and in 1893 were elected to the Second Division. They were London’s only professional club and the first club south of Birmingham City to be elected to the league. Their first ever league game was played in a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United. EPL 2011-12: QPR Vs Manchester United Match Time

Loftus Road will witness football action when QPR clash with champions Manchester    United in match week 16 of the Premier League on Sunday, December 18, 2011.

QPR are coming off a 1-0 loss away at Liverpool, in match week 15. QPR emerged with their dignity intact against their accomplished rivals, and they owed it to a sterling display by veteran goalkeeper Radek Cerny who kept the Liverpool forwards at bay for the most part. But for the keeper, Liverpool’s star Uruaguayan striker Suarez could have had a hat-trick but had to remain satisfied with just the solitary goal, off a header on 48 minutes. The pressure told on Liverpool and QPR came close to getting an equaliser when Martin Skrtel kicked QPR midfielder Faurlin in the late stages of the game but the penalty shout was ignored by the referee.

In match week 15, Man United registered a thumping 4-1 victory over Wolves, in a match hosted by the Red Devils at Old Trafford. This was United’s most convincing win getting their title defence back on track after it had flagged in recent weeks following a 6-1 loss at home to Man City. In a welcome return to form, Wayne Rooney scored a brace and that must be an ominous sign for United’s rivals who will be wary of the star striker’s propensity to score goals in bunches. Rooney’s return to form coincided happily with the reduction of his Euro 2012 ban and he was assisted by brilliant performances from Nani and Valencia, the latter dazzled with some brilliant crosses. Jones showcased his talent in midfield. On the flip side, Wolves forward Matt Jarvis proved a handful for Chris Smalling in United’s back-line (more…)

Premier League Preview: Chelsea Vs Manchester United

Premier League match time returns to Stamford Bridge, when Chelsea host Manchester United, in a first leg game on Tuesday, March 1, a match that was originally scheduled to be played on December 19, and got postponed owing to inclement weather.

Chelsea’s match against Fulham was meant to be all about Torres, who replaced Drogba in the starting eleven as the prime striker for the Stamford Bridge squad. While preferring Torres to Drogba gave Chelsea greater control in midfield. Fulham were resolute as ever in defence, and Chelsea failed to convert the half-chances they had to show for all of their superior possession.

David Lutz used the game to showboat his considerable skills. The Brazilian had more creativity than the whole midfield combined, and his only flaw was a lunge on Dempsey in injury time that resulted in a penalty for Fulham that Dempsey himself took. And Cech made a brilliant save to prevent Lutz’s solitary error from taking away from his great performance. The loss of two points has made Chelsea’s title defence an impossible mirage. (more…)

Head to head, in the last 18 years, Man City and Arsenal have met in 6 league games, with United winning on 5 occasions and the remaining game ending in a stalemate. The last time these teams met was in March 1996; that match hosted by QPR ended in a 1-1 draw. (more…)

Barcelona FC Vs Real Madrid

Spain is currently the football capitol of the world. Not only did they lift the World Cup last year, but, in Barcelona and Real Madrid, they have two of the finest football clubs in the world.

Naturally, the rivalry between these two foot-balling giants is intense, and every time that they meet, both teams’ reputations are subject to immense pressure, not only from their respective, loyal fan bases, but from the world’s media too.

Both sides play in the La Liga, the Spanish premier league. When these two great football colossi meet, (at least twice per year in league competition, and more if they play each other in any of the European trophy fixtures), the name that is given to the games, (yes they actually have a special name for this particular football fixture), is “El Clasico” – The Classic.

Since these two clubs first began playing against each other back in 1902, Real Madrid have a light edge, with a total of 74 wins over their old rivals, as opposed to Barcelona’s 73.

The origin of their great rivalry is actually politically charged. Barcelona FC, more affectionately known as Barca, (correct pronunciation “Barsa”), are the champions of the Catalonian region and its peoples, whereas Real Madrid many years ago were associated with Franco’s fascist regime. There is one amazing story that recounts the fortunes of one Alfredo di Stefano (more…)

Tottenham, Hot On Man City’s Heels, Target Win Over Wolves

ImageTottenham are set to clash with Wolves in match week 21, on Saturday, January 14, 2011. A win in the game will boost Tottenham’s title bid as Spurs are hot on the heels of Man City.To find out at what time the match between Tottenham and Wolves is due to kick off, take a look at the EPL schedule. In match week 20, Spurs registered a 2-0 win at White Hart Field against Everton. the win enabled Spurs to draw level on points with second laced Man United, three points adrift of table leaders Man City. After an early scare when Everton’s Saha shot wide, the hosts took the lead after Aaron Lennon cut in from the left to put the ball into the Toffees’ net. In one of many scoring chances in game dominated by Spurs, Emmanuel Adebayor shot over and wide. But the hosts kept up the pressure on Everton and it finally told when Benoit Assou-Ekotto scored from 30 yards out. Referee Martin Atkinson did the hosts a favour when he denied Everton a penalty after Younes Kaboul brought down Royston Drenthe late in the game, but in the end it was a well-deserved win for Spurs.

Wolves lost 2-1 in a home encounter with Chelsea, in match week 20. Chelsea won on the back of Frank Lampard who scored almost in the last minute of regulation time. But Wolves did themselves proud in a hard-fought encounter. Kevin Doyle almost got them an equaliser in injury time and would have earned them a point but for a great save by Cech to deny his header. Wolves had periods of domination both sides of the interval and particularly in the first half they were guilty of squandering brilliant scoring opportunities.

Head to head, in the last 8 years, Tottenham and Wolves have met in 7 league games, with Tottenham winning on 4 occasions and Wolves on 2, with the remaining game ending in a stalemate.
